Puerto Rico - Day 3

As if we didn’t do enough driving yesterday, we had to out do ourselves today.  This time we headed west. Once again, efficient freeways and tollways rushed us out of the city of San Juan and into the lush green tropical hillsides.  We left the thoroughfare at the suggestion of Lonely Planet and followed a narrow coastal road through rural hurricane damaged towns hugging the rugged shore.  We stopped to see a unique abandoned work of sculptured iron, a 110 meter statue of Columbus and his ship.  It was built as an entrance to a theme park that never got developed.  Once back on the main road, we experienced another Puerto Rican motorist staple; urban sprawl with crawling traffic, waiting endlessly through traffic lights. The northwest coastal cities unfortunately do not have an expressway.  We stopped at the small town of Isabela to have lunch watching surfers and waves crashing over rocks.  Then it was on to Aguadilla and finally Rincon for a beach walk for a sunset that got blocked by rain clouds.   Then it was the long drive home.  I had to stop for gas and was surprised to fill up with $25. ($2/gallon)  Because of a big lunch, we ate snacks before getting our sleep before the cruise.  We also secured our lodging andcar rental for our stay in PR after the cruise.
